Title says it all.  Thinking of driving to the south of France next spring and while Im there would like to see if I can find any of the reptiles/amphibians there.  I have used the herpfrance site to determine what lives where, but also  would like some indication on which area odf south france to go to as I know nothing about  the French habitat not where there are forests/heath/scrub land that  contains them.  Anyone know any good sites around Montpellier, Marsielle or Nice?

Thanks in advance.

Rob

Hi Rob,

I'd suggest dropping Daniel an email. (Click the 'contact' link at the top of the Herpfrance web page). He's a regular visitor on RAUK. Can't think of anybody who would have better info.

Cheers,

Steve

Rob,

I had some time a bit further south than Montpelier and found some great scrubby sites, some along the Canal Du Midi and then again on the road from Carcassonne to Perpignan through the Corbiere hills. There are some nice village stop-offs alongside rivers, ideal for herp hunting. Didn't get around to Nice area though.

Good luck.

Rob

Hi Rob,
Visited a region near Montpellier in 2008 for just 24hrs.See ladder snake report.Good habitat (vineyards)to be found between E11 and E80 roads west of Pignan.Weather was very hot so lucky to find anything.A dead southern smooth snake was also found and i'm sure montpellier snakes would also be in this area.
Tip:-Although i wander everywhere when looking nearly all my finds are at roadside..Perhaps stumbling across the rocks etc. alarms them well before visual contact.?Lizards also seem to get use to seeing and hearing people passing by allowing close approach but fleeing if you stop.
Good luck         &n bsp;         &n bsp;         &n bsp; Rupe
